Dental fillings

Fillings do exactly what their name suggests – they fill a hole in the tooth that has been caused by decay or replacing tooth material lost by trauma in an accident. They play an important role in helping us to keep a tooth for many more years.

We offer both tooth-coloured (white) fillings, which are virtually invisible, and the traditional grey amalgam ones. Many people prefer the tooth-coloured (white) ones simply because they look so much better.

Modern white composite fillings are almost as strong as metal fillings and in many ways are better. White fillings stick to the enamel and dentine of the teeth with a very strong bond meaning less tooth needs to be drilled away to hold the filling in place.

We normally numb the tooth and the surrounding area with a local anaesthetic. Once numb, we will drill the decayed material from the tooth, and will then fill the hole with either amalgam (metal) or tooth-coloured material.

We will then shape the filling so it does not interfere with the way you bite and chew. For tooth-coloured fillings, the shaping also helps the tooth to look as realistic as possible.

If you think you may need a new filling or you are not happy with an existing filling please get in touch to find out how we can help.
